I only encountered two people today but both are noteworthy.
At 10:30 am, I walked down to the beach with Michael so he could see it for the first time since we arrived. On our way back, we passed a man with long gray hair who was headed towards the Avalon Fishing Pier. He was barefoot in 46 degree weather and drinking a Budweiser tall can nestled in a beach restaurant themed beer cozy. Michael said what I was already thinking -"I love this town."
Later today, as I was unpacking boxes, I heard a faint knock on the back door. Standing outside was a woman in her fifties carrying a bottle of wine that said "Vineyards on the Scuppernong" and featured a drawing of a seahorse made out of shells. She introduced herself as my neighbor and offered me this welcome gift from a local vineyard. This was a very appreciated and sweet gesture. She asked why I moved here and I explained to her I just got the idea and made it happen within a few weeks' time without even really taking the time to think about it. She said that she hears that story from just about every person she meets here. When I asked her what she does here on the island, she said that she collects seashells and writes Bible verses in them and calls it Shell Ministries. Odd hobby, in my opinion, BUT SHE BROUGHT WINE!
H, you are a hero to me! I love people who leap and take alternative paths. Looks like you landed in a great spot. I look forward to reading more entries on your blog.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Debra. How did you find my blog, out of curiosity?
